After starting out playing in Sapporo in the late 70's, DJ Nori moved to NYC in 86' where he formed a friendship with Larry Levan, and began playing with him at clubs like Choices and Trax. Nori immersed himself in the NY dance scene as both a fan and a participant playing at a variety of spots and befriending people like Larry, David Mancuso and Walter Gibbons etc...
In 89 he returned to Japan to become a resident at Tokyo's legendary club "Gold", Nori held down that residency and continued to travel back to NYC and various spots world wide. He has had several long running nights amongst them "Smoker" and "Gallery". Nori has released original work, put together great compilations, and mix albums. Through it all he has continued to keep the underground NYC vibe alive and has been a great ambassador for both the NY and Tokyo music scenes, whenever David Mancuso takes the Loft to Japan, Nori is always involved with the proceedings. We are really happy Nori made time to roll up to the home office to record this set.
Special thanks to Taka for doing some translation work, and to Yuji Kawasaki for helping set the afternoon up.

X-Press 2 and Moton Honcho Darren House aka Diesel has been making and playing great music since the early 80's, and has a deep and complex sensibility that comes through in both his sets and production work. Initiated to a broad range of sounds (from Ibiza's Balearica to acid house warehouse parties), Darren started playing gigs with DJ Harvey and Ashley Beedle, and with Harv and Dave Jarvis started the Moton label (really a gold standard for great edits still). Teaming up with his pal Rocky (Darren Rock) to form X-Press 2, (releasing London X-Press, Muzik X-Press) and world-wide fame and success followed, joined for a time by Ashley Beedle, (more on him soon enough) X-Press 2 rolls on, and Darren keeps digging and working on new projects. (look for SOB and some solo work soon) Darren has been one of the heavyweights of dance music on all levels for the past 3 decades. He is also a great pal and we are psyched to have him finally on board with this elegant set.

An old friend of the DSGT fam, Hugh Herrera made his bones as the music director of Candelas, a lounge in San Diego. Featuring himself and a strong group of local talent as residents, Hugh also brought in people like Juan Nunez, DJ Harvey, Phil Mison and um some guy named Kane as guests. They were great nights followed by terrific after parties at his cohort Chris Renzulli's "office" ( a music studio/party space buried with in an office. Time literally stops there!). Hugh and Chris also started the Pacific Beach recording company a few years back, with edits by DJ Harvey as their initial offering. Since 2006 Hugh has been running/hosting (along w Tony Watson), the H-track radio show, a podcast that features great mixes often with a balearic slant. You can find Hugh doing serious balloon work helping set up for David Mancuso's Loft parties or you may catch him in a serious Kumbhaka Pranayama pose. (if so let him breathe!) for all things Hugh go to: http://www.h-track.com
Thanks again Hugh for all the good vibes and warm sounds! Namaste.
A true NY giant, Bruce Tantum has been rocking good sounds since his early 80's youth. (when he was the bassist in the band Moot playing at the Mudd Club, Danceteria, and the Peppermint Lounge) Soon the DJ Siren beckoned him, and Bruce was on the wheels of steel at spots like Limelight, Centro Fly, Save the Robots, and practically every NY club large, (Cielo/Love/Santos) or small for the past two decades.
Bruce is also well known as a music journalist (night life editor for TONY for the past 14 years), contributor to Resident Advisor, The Voice, and numerous periodicals and blogs.
For the past good 6-7 years Bruce has run his own mix show Body Control on EVR. Check the archive here:

Manchester native Andi Hanley was for years one of the great things about NYC, charming, low-key, a great great DJ, he quietly was a graceful presence in the land of the overhyped and ego driven. For years Andi held down the music supervision for Rock Star games and was responsible for a lot of great music getting out to the gaming masses, Andi also was a vital member of Body and Soul, for years doing the warm up and setting the sound palette for Danny, FK, and Joe. Andi has since moved back to Manc, and is currently on the hunt for his own space to install his system and set up a proper party. (tell us when chief!) We are happy to have this great set from him, and we are also happy to have the great Disques Town drawing he did for us!

For those that know, Sean P is the man, possessing tremendous knowledge and refined taste, he takes things to the next level and keeps it adult. (Not to editorialize, but in this new - flavor of the min - 2 edits and a remix and I'm a star - triteness of the nu disco scene, someone like Sean is a necessary antidote) Check out his mixes, his edits (on Cosmic Boogie and Tirk etc..), or his super nice compilations - His "Originals" for Mudd's Claremont imprint, Destination Boogie, SupaFunkanova or Disco not Disco - with Joey Negro, or you may know his mastering and restoration work (see Brand New Wayo on Mukatsuku, or the Originals series on Claremont). Sean is a dean who has done his studies, so school up disco children and enjoy... For all things Sean check him here: http://www.discogs.com/artist/Sean+P.#t=Credits_All&q=&p=1
Paul Murphy aka Mudd runs the great Claremont 56 label and has published a tremendous amount of quality music over the past 5 years. Party People for our 1 year anniversary we have as a very special guest the one and only Greg WIlson! Greg WIlson is a legend who began DJ'ing as a teen and rose to prominence in the 1980's building the electro scene in Manchester. Greg was a serious advocate of electro funk and helped the music grow through his residencies at Wigan Pier and The Club Legend, later he moved on to The Hacienda and helped bring black music to the forefront of the programming there. The first man to mix live on British TV, Greg has done it all, and done it exceptionally well - DJ'ing, production, edit's, remixes, he has managed, written about and been a tireless crusader for the music he loves. To get the full skinny on Greg and absorb the depth and breadth of his activities check him at: http://www.electrofunkroots.co.uk and also at: http://www.gregwilson.co.uk.
For this podcast (our first non mix one) Greg wanted to discuss the year 1982 and the emergence of the electro funk sound from NYC. it is an inspired and wide ranging chat and the time flew by, we continued it later on the phone and still felt like we had only scratched the surface.
Joining us in studio was the great Salvatore Principato. Lead singer and composer for both Liquid Liquid and Fist of Facts, Sal is one of the iconic figures of modern dance music. In addition to his band work Sal has thrown several long running parties, done a great TV show, remixed, edited and performed on numerous tracks and been an equally enthusiastic champion of the sounds he lives for. (More on Mr. Principato when his upcoming live set and afro mix are dropped on subsequent podcasts) to get some info on this legend go to: http://www.discogs.com/artist/Salvatore+Principato?noanv=1, or http://soundcloud.com/sal-p-sean-b or see him here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BEARxq9mwM
As it is our one year anniversary I want to send special thanks to Sean Bee and Tariq Abdus-Sabur, their help with the recording and sound has been a huge help. I also want to thank Corey Zak of http://www.corzakinteractive.com for helping us do the interwebs, and The great Mark Dann for his terrific engineering and mixing work: http://www.markdannrecording.com/MarkDannRecording/home.html
Thanks to all of the great contributors and to all who listen and write in - we got plans for year two, new partners, more platforms, our own app and most importantly some amazing music and guests!!! Open 24/7 We never close xx dk!

Mike Smith aka Balearic Mike is one of the world's more unsung DJ Heroes, but of late his praises seem to be getting sung well beyond his native Manchester. A long time buyer at Vinyl Exchange, Mike has always gone his own way and dug deep (a common theme here), any one who has listened to his Cosmic Alphonsus series, or his Originals comp (done with Moonboots) knows the deep water he swims in. Mike has played at Electric Chair, Horse Meat Disco, Pacha and Space in Ibiza, with me in NYC and at numerous spots worldwide. He does the Estrellas parties with Jan Hammered on the reg, he also co-runs the Fascinating Rhythms inprint with Steve Terry.
Low key, far out and on point, we are happy to have MIke join this series. For all things Mike check here: http://www.discogs.com/artist/Balearic+Mike
note: Mike's set is entirely 45's, and in solidarity - with the exception of some newer jams so is mine (about 70%). Size matters! enjoy! Our next podcast will mark 1 year for Disquestown my thanks to all who have joined on this ride, more treats in store! dk

One half of the esteemed recording group Quiet Village, (along with Matt Edwards) Joel Martin has always dug deep and sought to broaden the spectrum of sounds included in the dance and balearic genres. A serious cineaste, who has compiled and rereleased some classic and slept on horror soundtracks, (Ivor Slaney's Terror and Prey, and The Alternative music from Dawn of the Dead), Joel has a connection to the lushness of film and sound library music (he also works on projects for DeWolfe) that informs his production work and playing.
His new project, (with Gerry Rooney) Velvet Season and the Hearts of Gold will be debuting on their Golden Hole/Lucky Hole label. Look for the new Quiet Village remix comp Too High to move on the Pyramids of Mars label.
For all things Joel/ Zeus go to: http://www.discogs.com/artist/Joel+Martin+(3)#t=Credits_All&q=&p=1
One of the legendary figures in contemporary dance music Gerry Rooney's sensibility is rooted in the late 80's UK acid house and NYC garage scene. A serious collector (and for years) a dealer of some of the best and most unusual records out there, Gerry has always been ahead of the curve and hugely influential. Best known for his Black Cock edit series, (done with DJ Harvey), a series of arrangements of dance and atmospheric tracks that still impacts contemporary dance music.
Gerry is an amazing DJ who always stays true to his sophisticated sensibility. (every time I have had him over to play it has always been memorable -dk) Gerry's current project (with Joel) is the aforementioned Velvet Season and the Hearts of Gold. Look for lots from these two.
Again - so happy to have two old pals and amazing dj's throw down - a ballast to all the wackness the saturates the scene.

Our Pal Phil Mison is one of the pre-eminent practitioners of the "balearic" sound in both his dj sets and production work. After an early residency at Londons Milk Bar, Phil was brought on board by Jose Padilla to play at the legendary Cafe del Mar in Ibiza and honed his chromatic and lyric style with many sunset parties there. Phil went on to release, the "Original Chill Out" and four volumes of the popular "Real Ibiza" series.
In addition Phil has released several albums of original material under the "Cantoma" moniker and has released original and remix work with fellow guest Pete Herbert under the name "Reverso 68" Look for his great "Originals" comp on the Claremont label and hope you get a chance to see him play at one of his many gigs in the UK & Europe. Phil has been a great friend over the years and we are thrilled to have him join this series.
For all things Phil check: http://www.discogs.com/search?type=all&q=Phil+Mison and http://www.myspace.com/cantoma
Pete Herbert (who used to run the Atlas record shop), has blazed a significant production and remix trail while also traveling worldwide for his numerous DJ gigs. In addition to his Reverso 68 and Frontera work (with Phil Mison), Pete has work out as Bakazou and LSB (with baby g),
and has the Superdiscoteca edit label. Pete has done remix work for the Juan Maclean, Grace Jones, Badly Drawn Boy, Low Motion Disco, Ilya Santana - the list goes on and on.
Pete also has a ton of great solo work - including dance floor crusher "Yo Drums" (on his Maxi Discs label).
To check out Pete's impressive discography go to: http://www.discogs.com/search?q=pete+herbert&btn=&type=all
Pete is a terrific DJ and brings the same bright intensity to his sets that mark his production and remix efforts. Pete seemingly has an endless stream of tracks and remixes coming out, and we are really happy he made time in his hectic schedule to do this cast with his pal Phil.
Cheers!

Paolo Di Nola a.k.a. Cosmic Metal Mother (DS002) started his music career as founder and DJ of the italian club "Devotion" in 1986, importing a NY house vibe to Rome, setting new standards for sound and presentation and bringing an underground feel to Italian dance floors. He later moved to NYC - (I met Paolo when he was brought in to help us at A1 with the punk and new wave records - dk) Paolo had a long running show on East Village Radio and DJ'ed at various clubs in town. Relocating to Europe in 2007 he started the label PANACUSTICA.
The label is based on collaborations between international artists who share the common goal of delivering high quality music to the world. Guests such as, Larry Heard, Prins Thomas, Keiichi Sugimoto and Baby Ford have participated. From Prog-Rock to Psychedelica, to all things left field, and that early Detroit /Chicago sound, Paolo has been there before most. A true tastemaker and terrific dj/producer. We are thrilled to have our dear friend/collaborator join the podcast.

Ryan Bishop aka The Beat Broker has been a big contributor to the Disques Sinthomme/Ghost Town catalogue (GT005, 003, DS003) and is a producer/remixer who's work has a dynamic and subtle touch. Ryan first came to notice as one half of Broker Dealer (with Ryan Fitzgerald) check their releases on the Asphodel and Spectral labels amongst others. As a solo producer Ryan has a huge catalogue of edits, remixes and original tracks, you can check that here: http://beatbroker.net/releases.
Ryans remix of Jerry Williams "Easy on Yourself" is one of my all time favorite tracks. (Glad we got to release it) In addition to his production work Ryan is also an ace behind the decks, and is the creator of http://dreamchimney.com/, a collective music blog the focuses on rare and obscure jams.

The Disques Town podcast rolls on for 2012 with 2 high energy mixes from Justin and Spun!
An iconic figure in New York nightlife, Justin Strauss has held it down in practically every influential NYC club for the last 3 decades, (The Mudd Club, The Ritz, Limelight, Area, The Tunnel, M.K., and most recently Cielo for Francois K's birthday !) Flawless mixing, an easy flow and great energy characterize his sets, this is NY by night! In addition to his great DJ skills Justin is a storied producer and remixer, working for the likes of 808 state, Luther Vandross, Malcolm McClaren, Depeche Mode, B-52's, (and with Whatever Whatever partner Bryan Mette), LCD Soundsystem, La Roux, and most recently Lenny Kravitz (the latter featured in his set) Justin is that good thing and we are thrilled to have him on our podcast.

DJ Spun emerged from the bay area rave scene, (and really helped define it), touring widely for years before putting roots down in NYC. He has been a huge figure in the NYC and new dance music world. He was the artistic director of the PS1 Warm up series for years, and turned a staid museum courtyard into one of the biggest and most influential parties going. Spun is also the founder of the Rong music, (along with Ben Cook), one of the premier independent dance music labels. Rong has put out great music from How & Why, Mudd, James Chance, Gary Davis, Woolfy, and Coti Mundi among others. Spun has also done extensive production and remix work on labels like Siesta, Whatyouwannado, and Church Street recordings. Jason is a monster on the decks and brings his storied history to his sets which cover an impressive range of sounds and always have a utopian intensity and epic scale. He is definitely, in the words of Ken Kesey, "On the bus"! (He is usually driving it!)
Check in on Spun and all matters Rong here: http://www.rongmusic.net/

Tokyo resident and Jansen Jarden honcho Max Essa has been making music since the early 90's, he has produced tracks and remixes for labels like Paper, D-Vision, Bear funk, Nang and Tirk... His own solo work, Midnight Garden and Continental Drift feature not only his production work but his elegant guitar playing. (as does his remix of Apollo Heights!) Back to the Beach released from Continental Drift was a huge record and is emblematic of Max's cosmic and crisp production style. In addition to his playing and producing Max is also a serious DJ as his guest set here shows.

One of the first wave of serious UK train graf writers, Richard gained notoriety with his musical projects Padded Cell and Bronx Dogs. He has also done production and remix work for LCD Soundsystem, Bryan Ferry, Saint Etienne and The Jungle Brothers amongst others. Our man Tiago was in town recently for some gigs and was nice enough to come out to Kane studios to record a podcast, hang, and have some liquid refreshments. Hailing from Lisbon where he is a weekly resident at Club Lux, Tiago has a laid back intensity that is reflected in the expansive and inquisitive nature of his sets. Raised on good music in his home, turned on to drumming by his older brother, he came to Dj'ing via live music. He has been at it for close to twenty years, and in the last decade added production work to his resume.
